Administrative Assistant Tax Deductions
At tax time, anyone who works as an administrative assistant can use the organizational skills required to properly perform their job to make filing their tax return easier. Your employer will send you a Form W-2, Wage and Tax Statement, which will list their total income and tax withholdings.
If you've accumulated job expenses that have not been reimbursed, you may be able to deduct them at tax time and lower your tax liability. Some examples of expenses that can be deducted include:
- Professional association dues
- Supplies or job-related equipment that is replaceable within a year
- Local or state regulatory fees, flat rate occupational tax, or licensing, as long as it's not for initial certification
- Subscriptions to journals or publications related to your field
All expenses should be able to be proven with receipts.
Those who are in school may meet the eligibility requirements for either the Lifetime Learning Credit or the American Opportunity Credit, as long as they attend a university, college or trade school. Check with your financial adviser for more information regarding these credits.
Job-related educational expenses may be deducted if the courses meet certain qualifications. Refresher courses, vocational classes, and courses that teach new developments are generally deductible, however those used to receive minimum qualification for your job or initial licensing are not. You also can't deduct education that qualifies you for a new job or career.
