Tax Deductions for Package Handlers
Do you deliver packages to homes and businesses or work for a company that does? If you work in a warehouse or logistics for packages, you'll follow the same rules at tax season as many other employees when it's time to file your tax return. Your employer will supply you with a Form W-2, Wage and Tax Statement which will list your earnings and withholdings for the year.
You're able to lessen the amount you owe in taxes by deducting unreimbursed expenses related to your job. To claim expense deductions, you should use a Schedule A, Itemized Deductions. These miscellaneous deductions are limited by 2% of your adjusted gross income. Keep your receipts and other documentation in a safe place where you can access them easily.
Some examples of expenses you may deduct include:
- Union or trade association dues
- Safety equipment, such as steel-toed boots
- Subscriptions to industry related publications
- Maintenance and cleaning of required uniforms, as long as they are required for work and not suitable for streetwear.
Any educational seminars or classes you take have to meet certain qualifications in order for those expenses to be deductible. In most cases, refresher courses and those that teach new industry developments qualify. Non-job specific training that can be used in other professions as well as required training for your job is not a deductible expense.
