  • 5 % on income from $8,001 to $9,000
  • 6 % on taxable income greater than $9,001

All state tax returns are due by the federal due date of April 15th, unless that day is not a business day, in which case returns would be due the following day.

Residency

Missouri taxpayers are considered residents if they have a domicile within the state. Anyone with a permanent home outside of the state does not meet the guidelines for Missouri residency. A nonresident is anyone who has spent less than 30 days total in the state, or one who doesn't maintain a permanent home in Missouri.

However, a resident can be a taxpayer who hasn't yet established a permanent home, but has had stable shelter and spent more than 183 days in the state. Residents who pay tax to another state for income earned in that state may be eligible to claim a credit.

When to File

If you aren't required to file a federal tax return, then as a Missouri resident, you aren't required to file through the state either. If you do file a federal return, you may be exempt from filing through the state if you meet the following:

  • You are a Missouri resident with less than $1,200 in Adjusted Gross Income
  • You are a nonresident with less than $600 of income earned in the state of Missouri
  • Your total Missouri income is less than the total of the standard deduction and personal exemption together.
