At tax time, residents of the state of Oregon are eligible to deduct some of what they paid in federal taxes when they file their state returns. The state income tax is assessed over four income brackets at rates ranging between 5% and 9.9%. For residents who file either Single or Married Filing Separately the brackets are:

  • The first $3,250 of taxable income at 5%
  • Between $3,251 and $8,150 of taxable income at 7%
  • Between $8,151 and $125,000 of taxable income at 9%
  • All taxable income above $125,001 at 9.9%

Income thresholds are doubled for taxpayers who file jointly, or using the Head of Household or qualifying widow(er), though the rates remain the same. Oregon state tax is due by April 15th, as long as the date falls on a business day. Otherwise, the deadline is extended to the next business day.

Domestic partners whom are recognized by the state are subject to the same taxation as married couples, as they are able to file either jointly or separately. Same sex couples who were legally married outside the jurisdiction of Oregon are treated equally as any other married couple.

Residency

Anyone who creates a permanent home within the state of Oregon is considered a resident no matter where they live during the tax year. Oregon residents have to meet the following requirements:

  • Oregon is the state in which permanent household is established
  • Social, family, and financial ties to the state exist
  • When absence from the state occurs, intention to return to Oregon is always present

Full-year residents include those who have moved out of state for temporary purposes, or have returned after a short term absence. Any taxpayer who spends greater than 200 days in the state may be considered a resident even if they don't live there.
