A resident of Iowa is one who maintains an abode within the state. Full-year residents are taxed on all income no matter where it was earned, unless otherwise excluded by law.

An abode is any established place of residency within the state that the taxpayer remains for a significant period of time. An abode must meet the following rules:

  • The time spent in the specific region
  • The type of abode
  • The individual's nature of being there
  • The purpose of the individual's business in the region
