States have three different systems they can opt for when assessing taxes to their residents: joint, combined, or a mix of the two other systems. Maine sticks with the majority, opting for the popular joint system, which is similar to the federal government’s taxation of married couples. This system combines the incomes of two spouses into a single entity for taxation.

Maine’s system uses the federal adjusted gross income as a base, and most sources of income adhere to the federal guidelines for inclusion in taxation. There are some significant differences that residents should be aware of, however.

Taxpayers in Maine can exclude the following sources of income in their base for taxation:

  • Interest from United States Government bonds
  • Gains resulting from the sale of Maine Waste Management and Recycling bonds
  • Gains resulting from the sale of investment income from the Northern Maine Transmission Corp
  • $6,000 or less in public, private, civil service and military retirement income, not including Social Security and Railroad retirement benefits
  • Social Security benefits

Taxpayers can take a standard deduction based on filing status:

  • Single - $6,100
  • Married, filing single - $5,070
  • Married, filing joint - $10,150
  • Head of Household - $8,950

In Maine, those who are over 65 or are blind can receive an additional $1,500 if they use the single or Head of Household. If married, these taxpayers may receive $1,200 more per person.

State level deductions have a few significant differences compared to the federal law. State income and sales taxes aren’t deductible, and residents can’t claim premiums on mortgage insurance. Deductions are limited in Maine by federal thresholds, and itemized deductions are subject to a max of $27,500.

There are some items that can be deducted at the state level, including:

  • Long-term care insurance premiums
  • $250 or less of contributions to a qualifying state tuition program
  • Earnings from a conservation fund fishing operation
  • Federal work opportunity and empowerment zone tax credits
